Top 10 EVP Examples in US Credit Unions 2026

This is the first credit union list in the Happydance series celebrating the best EVP examples by sector and market. Credit unions have a story most employers would envy: they are owned by their members, not shareholders. But a strong mission is not the same as a strong EVP. The question is whether the careers website tells candidates what the job asks of them, as well as what it gives. For the wider sector, see our Top 10 in US financial services, and for the UK view, our Top 10 in UK financial services.

As always, this is a celebration, not a teardown. Every point of praise is tied to something you can read on the credit unions’ own pages today. I scored each EVP with the Happydance EVP grading framework, built on the two books behind our approach, Give & Get Employer Branding and Sell The Truth. Both start with the question every candidate is really asking: “Do I have what it takes to thrive at your organization?”

How we scored the best EVP examples

  • The Give and Get
  • The whole truth
  • Story proof
  • Employee voice
  • Distinctiveness
  • Audience fit
  • Alignment
  • Proof

Each EVP is scored from 1 to 5 on eight criteria taken directly from Give & Get Employer Branding and Sell The Truth, for a total out of 40: the Give and Get, the whole truth (harsh realities named plainly), story proof, employee voice, distinctiveness, audience fit, alignment and proof. Ties are broken by the Give and Get, then the whole truth, then story proof.

I only scored what is public. Every quote below was copied from the credit union’s own pages on 30 October 2026, and each entry links to its source. A lower score on one criterion is a note about what was visible on the pages I reviewed, not a judgement on the culture behind it.

Navy Federal Credit Union

What they do brilliantly

Navy Federal knows exactly who it serves, and it writes its EVP around them: “Our Members are the Mission and our teams, serving and supporting, are the heartbeat: fiercely appreciated, intensely valued and thoroughly cared for.” Its military hiring page is honest about the move most of its veteran hires are making: “The transition to civilian life can be both challenging and exciting, and we’re here to help you navigate this next phase with ease.”

The Give and Get

The Give is a voice and a contribution: “We share ideas, confidently speak up and fully contribute to Navy Federal's success and Mission.” And for technology roles: “If you think change is critical to growth and you love a challenge, you’ve come to the right place.” The Get is unusually broad for part-time and full-time people alike, including “a pension plan, on-site wellness and fitness centers, discounts on childcare and entertainment, adoption assistance and even pet insurance.” The deal is summed up on the military page: “because when you thrive, our members thrive.”

The story proof

Phanya “West” Sisoukrath spent 21 years in the Marine Corps and tells the whole truth about leaving it: “I was nervous. I didn’t know how I would provide for my family.” He joined through a fellowship in his last months of service, was hired full time as a security officer and promoted to senior security specialist three months later. Chryssy Johnson, Military Talent Program Manager, brings her own experience to the work: “As a military spouse, I’m grateful to offer firsthand insight that helps strengthen Navy Federal Credit Union’s efforts to attract, engage, and support military-connected talent”.

What we can all learn

Tell the truth about the transition. A Marine admitting he was nervous about providing for his family reassures the next veteran more than any promise could.

How to get more from the careers website

West’s story lives in the Navy Federal newsroom, and the careers homepage stories from Dale, Alberto and Jamani are in video. Bring West’s story onto the military hiring page, with written highlights of the video stories alongside, so veterans can read the move they are about to make.

Alliant Credit Union careers website, captured 30 October 2026. Source: https://www.alliantcreditunion.org/careers

What they do brilliantly

Alliant has the most distinctive story in the sector and tells it in one line: “As the first credit union to go 100% online, we defy all odds by keeping people at the center of everything.” Then it does something few careers websites dare to do. It points candidates to evidence it does not control: “We believe in full transparency.” and “Check us out on Glassdoor and LinkedIn”.

The Give and Get

The Give is set out as a working style: “We think big, move fast and own the outcome.” The Get is specific and practical: “At-home work opportunities plus in-office perks like free lunches”, a “401(k) match, performance bonuses, tuition reimbursement” and a “company-paid vision benefit”. Jillian Magna, Senior Manager, Partnerships, is honest that this is a company in motion: “Alliant is an organization where creativity is encouraged and ideas are welcomed, while also being in an exciting period of transformation and growth.”

The story proof

The voices are short but real and named. Stan C., a Vendor Management Representative, says: “Alliant is full of possibility and promotes internal growth; not only elevating me in my role, but in life.” Caroline S., a Senior Technical Writer, describes the employee groups: “Our ALL ERG amplifies the LGBTQ+ community and supports its allies, hosting regular events that are widely attended by all levels of the organization.” These are quotes rather than full stories, which is why story proof scores lower.

What we can all learn

Point to the evidence you do not control. Sending candidates to Glassdoor is a quiet act of confidence, and it builds trust.

BECU

BECU careers website, captured 30 October 2026. Source: https://www.becu.org/careers/application-process

What they do brilliantly

BECU tells the whole truth about the hiring process itself. Every candidate is told: “You will be provided with a full salary range for the position.” Its approach to AI is spelled out plainly: “We may use AI and digital tools to support parts of the hiring process, but these tools do not replace human review or decision making.” And the reason is given too: “We believe you deserve to know how this works.” It even plans for the candidates who do not get the job: “If the interview process does not result in an offer this time, stay connected.”

The Give and Get

The deal is written as an exchange: “At BECU, we recognize that our success depends on the contributions of our employees. In return BECU invests in your total well-being”. The Give is in the values: “We follow through on our promises to make good things happen.” and a test for every decision, “Is it the right thing for our members?” The Get is specific, including a “Paid parental leave benefit covering 12 weeks of leave”, and for those called up to serve, “BECU pays the difference between military base pay and BECU salary”.

The story proof

Kylie L., a U.S. Navy veteran and Lending Compliance Officer, connects her old career to her new one: “In the Navy, I oversaw that all rules and inspection requirements were followed. That work carries over well to my work in compliance.” And she is honest about what she missed: “It’s becoming a support system that I can turn to now that I no longer have the military.” Karla H., Manager, Experience Optimization, adds: “There’s never a shortage of high impact problems to solve for our members”.

What we can all learn

Make the hiring process part of the truth. A salary range and a plain AI statement tell candidates how they will be treated before day one.

How to get more from the careers website

Tisha, Jenna, Karla and Kylie each get one or two lines. Give one of them a full story with a before and after, so the culture page has the same depth as the hiring page.

What they do brilliantly

Desert Financial makes being local part of the deal: “Our CEO is down the street, not across the country, and our teammates embrace the same Arizona lifestyle you do.” And it has a tradition candidates will remember: “Once a year, we close all locations to convene under one roof for a day of networking, learning, inspiration, and service.”

The Give and Get

The Give is the experience you create for members, and the Get is a share of what that earns: “We share our financial success because we believe it's the right thing to do”. With more than 70 Work Perks, the Get is specific and often unexpected, from vacation and sick time sell back (“For when you don’t need the time, but the money would be great.”) to “up to four weeks of paid leave to care for or support a parent through our Elder Care benefit.”

The story proof

Esperanza’s story shows the ladder with dates: “I began my career at Desert Financial in 2021 as a Teller. After six months, I discovered my passion for serving others and helping them grow, which led me to a Senior Teller role.” She is now an Assistant Branch Manager and says, “I'm thankful to have found my dream career”. Lori, a Communications and Marketing Project Manager, is honest about her doubts before joining: “I was a little nervous to see if it would be the same once I was here... I'm happy to say that I had nothing to worry about.”

What we can all learn

Show the ladder with dates. Teller in 2021, Senior Teller after six months, Assistant Branch Manager today: that is growth a candidate can picture.

How to get more from the careers website

The perks page lists career advancement as a Growth Perk. Link it to Esperanza’s story, and add one or two more like it, so a new teller can see the path as well as read about it.

What they do brilliantly

Dupaco describes exactly who will fit, and writes it to the candidate: “You love building relationships. You value and support the concept of community. You’re eager to learn new things and always looking for new ways to grow. And most of all, you genuinely care about others and want to see them do well. Yep, that’s you.” Then it counts its growth: “In 2025, we celebrated 86 promotions and dedicated 16,489 hours to team training.”

The Give and Get

The Give is the purpose: “working toward a higher purpose: Looking out for our members’ best interests.” The Get is stated simply, “We believe in taking care of the people who take care of our members.”, and with one standout number: “A 401(k) plan with a 200% employer match.”

The story proof

The team speaks in its own words. Diana Millage says: “Managers and supervisors give employees the tools they need to succeed and grow. We are encouraged, coached, and able to achieve because of their guidance.” Sailu Aryal adds: “My personal values are 100% aligned with Dupaco’s mission and visions”. These are quotes rather than stories with a turning point, which is why story proof scores lower.

What we can all learn

Count your growth. 86 promotions in a year says more about career growth than any adjective.

How to get more from the careers website

Turn one of those 86 promotions into a story: who moved, from where to where, and what helped. It would sit perfectly under “Real Growth. Real Recognition.”

GreenState Credit Union

What they do brilliantly

GreenState writes the Give and Get in a single sentence: “We put our people first, and while we expect our team to give their best, in return, we deliver a total reward package that goes beyond the expected.” Its values are short enough to hold people to: “We are truthful and accountable.” and “We innovate and take measured risks.”

The Give and Get

The Get is specific: “above-market compensation and a double-match retirement plan”. And one employee puts the exchange in their own words: “What you put in is what you will get out of it. If you are bringing your best self every day, then you are bound to go places.” The proof behind the credit union itself is strong too: “For nearly a decade, GreenState’s ROM rank has consistently been in the top 5% of all credit unions nationwide.”

The story proof

The voices come from the engagement survey and are anonymous, such as “An employee in Collections”: “GreenState puts staff first and they empower staff so they can be the best version of themselves.” They ring true, but without names or turning points story proof scores lower.

What we can all learn

Write the deal in one sentence. “while we expect our team to give their best, in return” is Give and Get in a line.

How to get more from the careers website

The survey quotes are labelled by team, such as “An employee in IT”. Add a named story or two from the branches and IT, so candidates can picture a person behind each quote.

What they do brilliantly

SchoolsFirst gives every role the same purpose: “And while our job titles vary, we share a single job description: to help our Members achieve lasting financial security and well-being.” And it answers the first question every branch candidate has, publishing $24 an hour as the “Base salary in our branches.”

The Give and Get

The Give is clear about where you will work: hybrid means “Three days a week in the office and up to two days remote.”, and branch roles are “100% on-site, 0% remote.” The Get is generous and specific: “100% paid medical, dental and vision insurance for full-time employees and their families.” and “Up to a 7% match on 401(k) contributions (100% vested after two years).”

The story proof

Daniel, a Claims Recovery Specialist, links his past and present: “Helping others, first in the military and now here at SchoolsFirst FCU, gives me such a great feeling.” Erika, a branch manager, says: “I feel like I truly make a difference in our Members' lives. I love that I'm empowered to serve, and put our Members above everything else.”

What we can all learn

Publish the number. A base hourly rate on the benefits page answers the question most candidates are too polite to ask.

Mountain America Credit Union careers website, captured 30 October 2026. Source: https://careers.macu.com/

What they do brilliantly

Mountain America opens with a truth many employers avoid: “In an ever-changing market, job security can be hard to find. Mountain America prides itself on remaining strong and reliable through changing economic conditions.” Its values say how people disagree as well as how they agree: “We have the courage to bring out the best in each other and are respectful and understanding when we surface productive conflict.”

The Give and Get

The Give is ownership and pace, in values of “speed and focus” and a clear standard: “We proactively set expectations, keep commitments, own the experience and ensure quality and timely outcomes.” The Get is stated with care for accuracy: “Mountain America covers 83% of full-time team members’ medical costs.”, followed by the honest footnote that “83% is the standard medical cost covered by Mountain America, but it can be more or less, depending on the plan and tenure.”

The story proof

Nanette Graviet’s career is the story candidates need: “Graviet began her career at Mountain America 31 years ago as a part-time teller.” She is now Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer, and says: “I’ve been supported every step of the way by leaders who believed in me”. Her story is in the newsroom rather than on the careers website, which is why story proof and employee voice score lower.

What we can all learn

Name productive conflict. Values that say how you disagree are rarer, and more useful, than values that say you agree.

How to get more from the careers website

The careers website organises roles by team, from branch and member service to the service center and data analytics, each with its own talent community, and Trent Savage, chief human resources officer, talks through the culture and benefits in a podcast video.

What they do brilliantly

Patelco draws the career path, step by step, for each part of the business. In mortgage lending the steps run “Step 1 - Home Loan Servicing Specialist”, then processor, then underwriter. And it is honest about what the roles demand: “Successful team members must possess strong time management, and organization skills to manage a large pipeline of loans.”

The Give and Get

The Give is purpose and some hard parts named plainly, such as a regional lead role that means “Travel to branches within designated region on a frequent basis for an undetermined length of time.” The Get starts with the candidate: “What are your dreams and goals?” and “We want to help you achieve them by offering opportunities and benefits designed to strengthen your well-being and expertise.”

The story proof

Juan, a Consumer Lending Supervisor, says simply: “I love working for Patelco because of the great career advancements it offers us.” Veronica, a Financial Literacy Specialist, adds: “Patelco has supported me in making my dreams of serving the community and or members in a positive, proactive and meaningful way.”

What we can all learn

Draw the path. Showing the steps from servicing specialist to underwriter turns growth from a promise into a map.

What they do brilliantly

Gesa hands its careers page to three people who write at length and in their own voice. Amber Merrill, Community Relations Manager, shows where an internship can lead: “From working as an intern, helping pay for college, and supporting me throughout my 10+ year career, Gesa has always allowed me to find my passion and grow professionally.”

The Give and Get

The Give is a team that “Inspires, motivates, and challenges each other!” and “Has a tenacious drive to make a difference!” Erin Hubbard, Branch Manager, names both sides: “It allows endless opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally, making it a challenging and rewarding experience.” The Get includes “PTO + 10 paid holidays”, tuition assistance and commuter benefits.

The story proof

Mikal K. Rex, IT Security Administrator, has worked at Gesa for 12 years: “The emphasis here on work/life balance has been a huge blessing for me and my family.” And he says what makes the work worth it: “I find the most satisfaction in my position when I can help someone solve a difficult problem and can make their day a little easier.”

What we can all learn

Let people say it is challenging. “challenging and rewarding” is more believable than rewarding on its own.

How to get more from the careers website

The three colleague stories are long and warm. Give each one a short headline about their route in, such as intern to manager for Amber, so candidates scanning the page can find the story that matches theirs.

What we can all learn from the best credit union EVPs

Side by side, these ten share five lessons.

1

Tell the truth about the move. West says “I was nervous.” Lori was “a little nervous” before joining Desert Financial. Mountain America admits that “job security can be hard to find”. Candidates trust the employer that names their worry first.

2

Show the money honestly. BECU gives every candidate “a full salary range for the position”. SchoolsFirst publishes its branch base pay. Mountain America explains exactly what its 83% medical figure means. The Get is most convincing when it is specific.

3

Draw the ladder. Esperanza went from teller to assistant branch manager, Patelco maps each career path step by step and Dupaco counted 86 promotions in a year. Helping candidates see where they will thrive starts here.

4

Let your people tell it. Navy Federal, Desert Financial and Gesa prove their promises with first-person employee stories where the employee is the hero. As I wrote in Sell The Truth, “These are not testimonials. They are social proof at human scale.”

5

Write the deal in one sentence. GreenState says “we expect our team to give their best, in return” and BECU says “In return BECU invests in your total well-being”. That is Give and Get in a line.

If you want to see how your own EVP measures up, run it through the free Employer Brand and EVP Grader on the Employer Brand Atlas, the Happydance community for employer brand people. Frequently asked questions

What is an employee value proposition for a credit union?

An employee value proposition (EVP) is the deal between an employer and its people. Give & Get Employer Branding frames it as a value exchange: what your people give, and what they get in return. For a credit union, the best EVPs connect member ownership and purpose to an honest picture of the work, and prove it with real employee stories.

What are the best credit union employee value proposition examples?

In our 2026 list, Navy Federal Credit Union, Alliant Credit Union and BECU lead. The best credit union EVP examples state the Give and the Get together, are open about pay and the hiring process, and prove their promises with first-person employee stories.

Which credit union has the best EVP in 2026?

In our 2026 review of US credit union careers websites, Navy Federal Credit Union scored highest (33 out of 40), ahead of Alliant Credit Union (31) and BECU (30, ahead of Desert Financial and Dupaco on the whole truth).

How can I improve my own EVP?

State what you ask of people as clearly as what you offer, then prove each claim with a real employee story. The free EVP grader on the Employer Brand Atlas gives you a quick read on where to start.
