Top 10 EVP Examples in US Retail 2026

Retail asks a lot of its people: early starts, busy seasons and customers who do not always smile back. The best EVP examples in retail do not hide that. They name what the work asks, and show what people get back.

This is the fourth post in the Happydance series celebrating the best EVP examples by sector and market, after our Top 10 in US tech, our Top 10 in US financial services and our Top 10 in US healthcare. This time it is US retail: grocers, big-box stores and specialty retailers. Restaurants and hospitality will get their own list.

As always, this is a celebration, not a teardown. Every point of praise is tied to something you can read on the brands’ own careers pages today. I scored each EVP with the Happydance EVP grading framework, built on the two books behind our approach, Give & Get Employer Branding and Sell The Truth. Both start with the question every candidate is really asking: “Do I have what it takes to thrive at your organization?”

How we scored the best EVP examples

  • The Give and Get
  • The whole truth
  • Story proof
  • Employee voice
  • Distinctiveness
  • Audience fit
  • Alignment
  • Proof

Each EVP is scored from 1 to 5 on eight criteria taken directly from Give & Get Employer Branding and Sell The Truth, for a total out of 40: the Give and Get, the whole truth (harsh realities named plainly), story proof, employee voice, distinctiveness, audience fit, alignment and proof. Ties are broken by the Give and Get, then the whole truth, then story proof.

I only scored what is public. Every quote below was copied from the brand’s own pages on 30 October 2026, and each entry links to its source. A lower score on one criterion is a note about what was visible on the pages I reviewed, not a judgement on the culture behind it.

Wegmans

What they do brilliantly

Wegmans puts the person before the store in a single line: “WE are a food market where YOU make the difference.” Then it sets the bar out loud in its values: “High standards are a way of life.” That is a Give and Get you can read in two sentences.

The Give and Get

The Give is a high standard, held every day. The Get is growth and real support for life outside the store. The scholarship stories make it concrete: “This scholarship helps me… focus instead of wondering where I’m going to get money for books.” As Moises puts it, “You don’t just come here to work. You come here to do something more for yourself.”

The story proof

Heegan, a Team Leader who has worked in nine Wegmans stores over 11 years, tells a growth story with a setback in the middle. “After posting for a Produce Team Leader role early in his career, he received feedback and a different opportunity instead.” He did not stop. His lesson: “I learned to slow down, stay humble, and recognize every opportunity to learn as a step forward.”

What we can all learn

Tell the story of the job someone did not get. A rejection that became a better path is more convincing than any straight line to the top.

Bring the leadership and scholarship stories onto the homepage, next to the values, so candidates meet Heegan and Moises before they meet the job search.

Petco

Petco, number 2 in the Happydance Top 10 EVP examples in US Retail 2026, scoring 32 out of 40

What they do brilliantly

Petco’s EVP works because it refuses to separate the mission from the career. “Help pets live better and grow your career” is one promise with two beneficiaries: the animals in your care and you. Its purpose goes further and names its own people in the same breath as its customers: “to improve the lives of pets, pet parents and Petco partners (employees).” Few employers put their people inside the purpose statement itself. Petco does, and it changes how every other promise on the site reads.

The Give and Get

The Give is care, offered every day to pets and the people who love them. The Get is growth you can measure: “Over 40% of General Manager and District General Manager positions were filled by internal promotions in 2025”. Sierra P. shows the ladder from the very first rung: “I started as a bather in 2014”. Traci D. explains why the two halves belong together: “I make a difference by caring for the teams who care for pets every day.” That is the Give and Get as a chain of care, and it is beautifully observed.

The story proof

Jesse Freeman’s story is told with real courage. It opens with doubt: “I had reservations about taking a job with another corporate veterinary practice.” He is candid about why, recalling a past role where he felt “they tried to change me into only thinking about dollars and seeing patients as sales numbers and not individuals.” Then comes the change: “I am heard, appreciated, respected, and valued for my experience and expertise.” Because Petco lets Jesse name the tension first, his verdict carries the weight that only a story with conflict and change can carry.

What we can all learn

Put your people inside your purpose, then let your stories show the chain of care. When the people who look after customers are looked after too, a single sentence can hold the whole Give and Get, and honest stories like Jesse’s make it believable.

How to get more from the careers website

The homepage already pairs the promotion figure with partner stories. Link full spotlights like Jesse’s and Traci’s from there, so the honest turn in their stories reaches every candidate who scrolls.

What they do brilliantly

The Home Depot turns its own trade into its EVP: “Because the best place we’ve ever built is where we work.” It is distinctive, it fits the business, and it gives every employee story a frame to sit in.

The Give and Get

The Give is hard, practical work on the floor. The Get is a real ladder, with proof: “approximately ninety percent of our store leaders began in hourly roles”. Christy shows you do not need to arrive as an expert: “When I started, I didn’t have much construction or home repair knowledge,” she says.

The story proof

Chadd started in the car park and became a Store Manager. His first lesson is the story in miniature: “Working the lot taught me my first lesson: no role is too small to matter”. His verdict is just as plain: “Anything is possible at Home Depot.”

What we can all learn

Build your EVP line from what your business actually does. A metaphor borrowed from your own trade is hard for anyone else to copy.

What they do brilliantly

Trader Joe’s tells the whole truth better than anyone in US retail. It says plainly: “Our office team is lean and openings in our offices can be few and far between.” Most employers would never write that sentence. It saves candidates time and builds trust in everything else on the page.

The Give and Get

The Give is hard, hands-on work, and Trader Joe’s says so with affection: “Trader Joe's crew are among some of the hardest working people we know!” The Get is a ladder that starts on the shop floor: “Merchants are exclusively promoted from Trader Joe’s Crew Members.” The Captain who leads each store is “always promoted from within”, and leads from the floor: “there are no back offices”.

The story proof

The proof here is structural rather than personal. Every Merchant has come up from the Crew, and every Captain from within, so each store is led by a story of growth. What is missing today is those people telling their stories in their own words.

What we can all learn

Say the inconvenient thing. One honest sentence about where the openings are not does more for trust than a page of promises.

How to get more from the careers website

Let a few Crew Members and Merchants tell their own stories in their own words. The culture is distinctive enough that real voices would make it unforgettable.

What they do brilliantly

Walmart backs a simple promise, “Grow your future. Make an impact.”, with one of the strongest proof points in retail: “75% of salaried managers began as hourly associates”. Then it tells candidates exactly what to expect from the hiring process, which few employers of its size do.

The Give and Get

The Give is the work of serving customers at scale. The Get is growth and education, including tuition: Walmart says it “covers 100% of tuition and books”. And the hiring FAQ makes a promise about respect: “Yes, you will be informed if you are not selected for an interview at this time.”

The story proof

The stores page introduces store managers, club managers and a store coach by name. Brandon, the store coach, “leads with energy, empathy, and focus”, and his video covers what it takes to guide a team in “one of Walmart’s busiest stores”. Among the leaders’ quotes, one line stays with you: “You can be you in this environment and still succeed.”

What we can all learn

Tell candidates what happens after they apply. A promise to let people know when they are not selected is part of the Get.

How to get more from the careers website

Give stories like Brandon’s more room, and link them from each career area, so the 75% figure has faces behind it.

What they do brilliantly

Bath & Body Works ties its customer promise straight to its people: “We believe everybody deserves to feel good. That starts with our people.” Its values are honest about effort too: “We try new things, speak up and move forward with confidence, even when it's not easy.”

The Give and Get

The Give is courage: speaking up and trying new things when it is not easy. The Get is personal. Tanner, a controls technician, says: “When I started, I didn't know about the parental leave benefit and was grateful to get six weeks off to bond with my daughter.”

The story proof

Andrea, an assistant store manager, began as a seasonal associate: “I started as a seasonal sales associate and thought, wow ... I can turn this into my career.” Tiffanie, also an assistant store manager, sums up the culture in a line every employer would love to earn: “They're not just values on a piece of paper hanging on the board in the back room.”

What we can all learn

Connect the customer promise to the employee promise. When the brand idea starts with your people, the EVP feels like the brand, not a bolt-on.

How to get more from the careers website

Give Andrea’s and Tanner’s stories a full page each, and link them from the values, so each value has a person standing behind it.

H-E-B

H-E-B careers website, captured 30 October 2026. Source: https://careers.heb.com/blog/here-everyone-belongs-chad-madison

What they do brilliantly

H-E-B lets a senior leader say the hard part. Chad Madison, Senior Vice President of Warehousing, names the moment he finds toughest: “there’s nothing more challenging and disheartening than when you feel like you’ve missed the mark and haven’t been able to help a Partner achieve a goal they’ve set for themselves.” That is the whole truth, from the top.

The Give and Get

The Give is openness to change: “There is no traditional career path anymore. Instead of zeroing in on one thing, you’ve got to be open to new opportunities and skills.” The Get is the chance to have more than one career in one company: “We like to say at H-E-B, you can have many careers within the same company.”

The story proof

Chad moved from store operations into supply chain without knowing that side of the business: “I didn’t know anything about the Manufacturing, Warehousing, or Transportation side of our business.” Ten years on, he is still honest about it: “To this day, I’m still learning.”

What we can all learn

Let leaders tell the hard part. When a senior leader names what keeps them up at night, every promise on the page gains weight.

How to get more from the careers website

Bring stories like Chad’s from the blog onto the career area pages, so store, warehouse and office candidates each meet a Partner like them.

What they do brilliantly

ALDI applies its own values to the hiring process, and it shows. Its FAQ tells candidates exactly when to expect an answer: “Candidates who interview with ALDI are likely to hear back within two weeks of their interview.” Simplicity is the brand, and here it is the candidate experience too.

The Give and Get

The Give is clear and practical, right down to interview tips like “Arrive Early”. The Get is a long-term career on ALDI’s terms: “Joining the ALDI team can be your first step toward a successful, long-term career.”

The story proof

The stories on the Life at ALDI pages show careers that last. Maurice describes how, even after years of growth, “there was still so much more to learn”, and Lilly celebrates her 30th ALDI-versary after starting in the Batavia warehouse.

What we can all learn

Make the candidate experience part of the EVP. A clear timeline is a promise, and keeping it is proof.

What they do brilliantly

Target’s careers website is full of team members speaking for themselves, across stores, supply chain and corporate teams. Its culture line is easy to remember and easy to test against those stories: “Every day we care, grow and win together as one Target team.”

The Give and Get

The Give is to care, grow and win as one team. The Get is growth with proof behind it: Target says “more than 32,000 team members” have enrolled in its tuition-free education programme. A team member sums it up: “Target has supported my growth every step of the way”.

The story proof

Chip explains why mentoring mattered after a first career in the military: “Having a mentor has been really important to me because I had a first career with the military.” It is a small story, but it shows how the growth promise lands for one person.

What we can all learn

Make your culture line testable. Care, grow and win gives every employee story a question to answer.

What they do brilliantly

Costco lets Ryan, a manager, admit they never planned to be here: “If you asked 18-year-old me whether I wanted to work retail, I would have said you’re crazy. Ten years and two kids later, I can’t imagine doing anything else.” That is a whole-truth line most employers would edit out.

The Give and Get

The Give is “rewarding challenges”, and the Get is growth: “ample opportunities for personal and career growth.” Another voice shows the path for people who skip college: “I didn’t go to college right after high school. Instead, I got a job at Costco.”

The story proof

The voices are real but brief: a first name, a role and a state. Darrell, a supervisor, says: “Eight years later, I am still with Costco and will stay until I retire.” The raw material for fuller stories is there: people who arrived by chance and decided to stay.

What we can all learn

Keep the surprise. When someone says they never expected to stay, the story is already halfway told.

What we can all learn from the best EVPs in US retail

Side by side, these ten share five lessons.

1

Put the exchange in one line. Wegmans says you make the difference. Petco says help pets live better and grow your career. The Home Depot says the best place it has ever built is where its people work.

2

Say the hard part out loud. Trader Joe’s says office openings are few and far between. H-E-B lets a senior leader name what disheartens him. Bath & Body Works says speaking up is not always easy.

3

Prove the ladder with a number. Walmart, The Home Depot and Petco each publish how many leaders came up from hourly or internal roles. Helping candidates see where they will thrive starts here.

4

Let your people tell it, struggle included. Wegmans, Petco, The Home Depot and H-E-B prove their claims with first-person employee stories where the employee is the hero. As I wrote in Sell The Truth, “These are not testimonials. They are social proof at human scale.”

5

Treat the hiring process as part of the Get. Walmart promises to tell you if you are not selected. ALDI tells you when to expect an answer.

If you want to see how your own EVP measures up, run it through the free Employer Brand and EVP Grader on the Employer Brand Atlas, the Happydance community for employer brand people. Frequently asked questions

What is an EVP in retail?

An employer value proposition (EVP) is the deal between an employer and its people. Give & Get Employer Branding frames it as a value exchange: what your people give, and what they get in return. In retail the Give often includes busy seasons and long days on your feet, so the best EVPs name it honestly and show the growth that comes with it.

What are the best employee value proposition examples in retail?

In our 2026 list, Wegmans, Petco and The Home Depot lead. The best EVP examples in retail state the Give and the Get together, name the hard parts, and prove their growth promises with numbers and first-person employee stories.

Which company has the best EVP in US retail in 2026?

In our 2026 review of US retail careers websites, Wegmans scored highest (32 out of 40), ahead of Petco (32, separated on the whole truth) and The Home Depot (31).

How can I improve my own EVP?
